Shougang Jingtang Named “Top Runner of Water Efficiency” Once Again
Release Time:2025-02-21 15:52:23
Recently, Shougang Jingtang was once again recognized as a “Top Runner of Water Efficiency” among key water-consuming enterprises in China, as announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in its 2024 list of leading water-efficient enterprises and industrial parks.
This honor underscores Shougang Jingtang’s unwavering commitment to a circular economy and green, low-carbon development. The company has consistently optimized its production processes, strengthened water management controls, and implemented innovative water conservation and sourcing strategies, resulting in significant improvements in water resource utilization efficiency. In 2017, Shougang Jingtang was named “Top Runner of Water Efficiency” by the MIIT for the first time and hosted the nation’s first inaugural national field workshop on water-efficient technologies among the “Top Runners of Water Efficiency.”
In terms of water use control, Shougang Jingtang’s well-established water management system is characterized by comprehensive regulations and meticulous control. Water usage and conservation targets are allocated to individual processes and workstations, with periodical performance evaluations ensuring closed-loop management of water consumption. Leveraging its advantageous location near the coast, Shougang Jingtang developed the steel industry’s first thermal desalination project to produce freshwater with surplus heat from steel production. This innovative approach created a new model of turning surplus energy into resources and developing new water sources. Currently, the company’s desalination capacity reaches 95,000 tonnes per day, saving 26 million tonnes of surface water per year. In the meantime, Shougang Jingtang is actively exploring the combination of power generation and thermal desalination, thermal and membrane desalination technologies, and desalination and salt chemical production. The company’s research and development efforts have yielded breakthroughs in “water-electricity symbiosis” and “thermal-membrane coupling” technologies, filling several domestic and international technological gaps. These technologies have resulted in a new low-carbon, cost-effective Shougang desalination model that achieves in-depth utilization of low-temperature waste heat, thereby providing inspiration for coastal industrial enterprises in seawater desalination.
Shougang Jingtang continues strengthening water quality management and maximizing water conservation efforts by maintaining “just right” water quality standards. Through the sophisticated implementation of cascading water use and wastewater reuse, the company has dramatically improved its overall water efficiency. They have implemented a “rain and sewage separation” drainage system to ensure effective wastewater collection. All wastewater is treated deeply and fully recycled after meeting the required standards, based on the principle of quality-specific treatment.
